Welcome to Beyond Burns!

This temporary exhibition aims to shed light on the lives of those who have experienced Ellisland after the departure of Robert Burns in 1791.

By doing this, we aim to demonstrate the significant role Ellisland has played, and continues to play, within our local community.

We also believe that although Burns is No.1 around here, Ellisland has a unique and interesting story to tell. One which places itself at the heart of Nithsdale as well as international history.

Exhibition 1 begins with Burn’s departure and ends with our future. It focusses on the more practical aspects of Ellisland’s personality (i.e. life on the farm, welcoming visitors, and celebratory events).

Exhibition 2 is purely research based. Led by our young volunteer Logan Fry, the people of Ellisland and their stories have since been uncovered. There is still much work to be done but come and learn what we have discovered so far!
