Ellisland in the History of Robert Burns
Ellisland is of huge significance in the history of Robert Burns, it was here that he wrote some of his greatest works.
Built in 1788, Ellisland is the only home designed and built by Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns.
Burns built Ellisland for his new wife Jean Armour, he saw it as an opportunity to return to being a farmer and to be back at the plough on the land. Ever the poet, he didn’t just choose Ellisland for farming, he had a keen eye on its beautiful surroundings and found the riverside location of Ellisland to be truly inspirational. He wrote around 25% of his work here and described this place as his “sweet poetic ground”.
It is possible that without Burns’s time at Ellisland the world might never have been gifted with Auld Lang Syne, which was written at Ellisland.

Tartan Day is the Biggest Celebration of Scottish Heritage in the World
Tartan day is held on the 6th April every year and is a celebration of the signing of the declaration of Arbroath in 1320.
The declaration of Arbroath asserted the independence of Scotland from England and formed Scotland as a Country in it’s own right.
It’s no surprise that the biggest gathering to celebrate this land mark in Scotland’s history is held in the US in New York.
The influx of Scots heading to North America for a better life has left it’s mark on the people and culture across the USA with an estimated 8.3% of the US population having Scottish descent.
