Facilities

We have ample car parking an accessible toilet, a range of seating for picnicking and some fantastic riverside walks! Not to mention the museum and displays housed within the Ellisland buildings themselves.

Mostly Dog Friendly

We have some lovely walks along the river and most of the site is accessible with dogs, however we only allow assistance dogs into the museum buildings where we display our collections.

Where are we?

We are located 6 miles north of Dumfries on the A76. There is a short private road (0.2 miles) leading to Robert Burns Ellisland Museum & Farm from the A76.

How to get here?

Car parking is free to museum visitors, a small donation is recommended for visitors only utilising the walking paths.

The nearest bus stop is on the A76 at the end of the road to the museum. It is a 0.2 mile walk from the bus stop to the museum up our private road.


Venue Hire at Ellisland

If you’re looking for a unique venue to host your event, we have some fantastic spaces available at Ellisland Museum & Farm.

Our atmospheric Threshing Barn can seat 50+ theatre style. We can also arrange outside caterers for Burns Suppers or other meals. If you would like exclusive use of Robert Burns’ Ellisland farmhouse to celebrate in style, please contact us to discuss further.

School & Educational Visits

Ellisland Museum & Farm welcomes pre-booked school parties of all ages. Our Curriculum for Excellence schools programme is an ideal introduction to the poetry and life of Robert Burns, life in the past and hands-on history. As well as seeing where Burns lived and worked, both as a farmer and a poet, pupils can explore the outdoor space such as the orchard and paths where he wrote Tam o Shanter and To A Wounded Hare. The farm also has an extensive collection of farm machinery spanning two centuries, including dairy and domestic equipment.

Dogs Welcome!

Dogs are welcome onsite at Ellisland Museum & Farm. We have a complimentary water bowl available and dogs are welcome on site, however we are only able to allow assistance dogs to accompany you as you visit the collections in the Farmhouse.

About

Burns experienced his most creative and fruitful years here at Ellisland. He found great poetic inspiration in the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the various people he met and the events he witnessed whilst living here.

Burns Attractions

Ellisland Museum & Farm is conveniently situated on the road between Robert Burns’ birthplace in Alloway and his final resting place at St Michael’s Cemetery in Dumfries.

Membership

There is so much to see at Ellisland Museum & Farm, so please allow at least an hour for a short visit and two to three hours for a full visit. We’re a short, 5 mile drive from the centre of nearby Dumfries, just off the A76.
